Awaiting Peak Bloom

Peak cherry blossom bloom is a big deal in DC, at least for me anyway. For a few brilliant weeks, the city I know and love transforms into a real life Instagram – no filter needed!

Cherry blossoms are very temperamental by nature, so peak bloom (aka the point where the blossoms are at their pinnacle of picturesque-ness) is dependent on slight changes in weather – something I track almost religiously. And this year, peak bloom has been pushed back several times from mid-March to its current prediction, this weekend. Good things come to those who wait, right?

I’m not exactly an early bird, but I really hope to dig deep and get up early before work to shoot some blossom pictures this week. Two, possibly three, years ago I took this photo on my iPhone (below). I’m still quite proud of it and it remains one of my favorite shots to date. I’m not sure if I can get a better one this year, but boy I am going to try.

The CUTEST Swimsuits For Under $50

Finally the weather is starting to warm up (hallelujah!) and I can’t help but think about summertime and the ocean. Increasingly, I’m finding myself wandering over to the swimsuit section. Every year, almost without fail, I have the same reaction:

$250 for a bathing suit? You have got to be kidding me!

Are they getting more expensive over the years or do I just suffer from some sort of seasonal pricing amnesia? Don’t get me wrong, I will splurge every now and then, but I can’t help but ask myself: “Why I am paying the same price as a dress for less fabric?” In terms of cost per square inch of coverage, the ratio of a bathing suit is outrageous. (Side note – can we talk about how it’s a straight up crime that most of the time we have to pay for the top AND bottom of a bikini set? Someone needs to be held accountable for this.)

So I decided to search the internet for cutest, most affordable swimsuits for under $50. Here’s what I found:

Pick of the Week: Too Faced’s Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer

POTW - toofaced

This week’s Pick Of The Week is my hands down favorite bronzer of all time: Too Faced’s Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer. I stumbled upon this product years ago (probably around 10 years ago!) when I was desperately looking for a matte bronzer that didn’t have any orange tint or shimmer. It sounds like a simple ask, but it is oddly quite difficult to find. When I finally found the matte chocolate soleil I think I jumped for joy.

Since then, I’ve dabbled with a few other bronzers when I’ve run out and had to buy something quickly, but the others have never compared. I always come back to this one. It blends well and because it is made with real cocoa powder (what!) it smells just like chocolate. After all these years, I’m so happy it’s still on the market and I’m even more happy that it just so happens to be cruelty free!

It’s available at Sephora and retails for $30.00.

What is your favorite bronzer or Too Faced product? Tell me in the comments below!

DC Restaurant Review: HipCityVeg

One of the reasons I enjoy working in metro center (downtown DC) is how many restaurants and food options there are – especially for plant-based eating. Since expanding to DC last year (it’s Philly-based), HipCityVeg has quickly become one of my favorite lunch options.

Hip City Veg is a fast-food style restaurant with burgers, sandwiches, salads, wraps, etc. and everything is 100% plant based. Just walking in you know off the bat that’s it’s not a regular fast-food joint, it’s a ~*cool*~ fast-food joint. For starters, they’ve got a full wall with plants and, my favorite, plant-based books! I almost cried with happiness the first time I walked in and saw The China Study displayed prominently. And, everything that comes with your meal (napkins, bag, cutlery) is compostable. How awesome is that?

Their philosophy:

Embracing healthy bodies, a healthy planet, and compassion for all living things, we bring delicious vegan food to people everywhere.

This place “gets” me.

I’m a creature of habit and while I’ve tried lots of items on the menu, like the Ziggy burger, which is their flagship item, and chick’n nuggets, I usually stick with my go-to: the arugula taco salad with crispy chick’n on top (pictured below).

How delicious does this arugula taco salad with crispy chick’n look?

If you’re in the city and looking for a quick meal, I highly recommend Hip City Veg. It’s directly across from the Capital One Arena (formally Verizon Center) so it’s a great option for pre-game bites. I wouldn’t recommend coming with a large group for a sit down meal, however. Seating is limited.

Have you tried HipCityVeg? If so, what’s your favorite meal?

The Little Red Dress

IMG_5619JJ-Red-01JJ-Red-2JJ-Red-02JJ-Red-4JJ-Red-3

This weekend my John Farrell and I celebrated our one year anniversary. It’s been a crazy year, but I’m so happy to have him by my side. He’s my best friend and my rock. To celebrate, we went to the Kennedy Center and saw Shear Madness – a murder mystery comedy and filled with jokes for locals. I’ve never been to the Kennedy Center before, which is basically a crime in DC so I was SO excited to finally go and see this play I’ve been hearing all about. If you are in the DC area, I highly recommend checking it out. Tickets are only $54 and it’s a riot!

I wore this firetruck red off-the-shoulder dress from John + Jenn, which is available for only $70 (60% off at Nordstroms!). Shout out to my mom (#MamaKath), who basically styled this entire outfit. Everything I’m wearing (except the shoes) were a gift from her over the past year. MamaKath, you rock!

The best spring work dress… ever

032418-alexia-admor-04032418-alexia-admor-09032418-alexia-admor-07032418-alexia-admor-08

How cute is this dress? I refer to this as my flight attendant dress because I feel like a PAN AM air stewardess when I wear it.

What I love about this piece most is how versatile it is. I feel like I can throw this on any time of year. The bright blue color and flair sleeves make it fun, feminine, and perfect for warm weather, while the mock neck, dress length, and white trim around the collar and sleeves give it a conservative, tailored look.

The dress is by Alexia Admor and retails at $245, but don’t worry! It’s available to rent on Rent the Runway for a fraction of the price. For reference, I’m wearing a size XS.

Pick of the Week: Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea 4-in-1 setting mist

POTW - Tarte

For this week’s Pick Of The Week, I’m going with Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea 4-in-1 setting mist. I’m a big fan of the Tarte brand because: it has an insanely adorable mermaid theme (seriously, just look at the website!) and, of course, none of their products are ever tested on animals.

But don’t worry, to be the POTW it’s got to be more than pretty and cruelty-free. This setting mist is the holy grail of makeup. I’m in love with it because it works as a primer, makeup setting spray, hydrating mist, AND skin refresher all in one. In the winter, it keeps my skin moisturized when the air gets dry; and in the summer, it helps my makeup stay on during those hot humid days. (Side note: I usually don’t like multipurpose products. Items like 2-1 shampoo & conditioner confuse and annoy me …how can it be as good as a product solely dedicated to shampooing and a product solely dedicated to conditioning, you know? I don’t trust it.) That said, this setting mist is changing. my. views. Plus it’s vegan, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested, which I’m all about.

It’s $25 but it’s worth it. It’s available online and at Sephora.

Do you use this product too? If not, what setting mist would you recommend?
